I got me some new books!

Let's start from the bottom:

1. The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling
2. The Harmony Silk Factory by Tash Aw
3. The Fourth Estate by Jeffrey Archer
4. 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami
5. The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett
6. Catching the Sun by Tony Parsons

That was a good book haul, wasn't it? Bought them from Borders at Queensbay Mall yesterday. Got quite a pretty good deal, I think. They have this 'Buy 1, get 2nd at 50% off on the same stickered items, the least expensive book is discounted' promotion going on.

I had to choose proper-sounding titles as this would be off my company's book allowance. It was also important that I have the interest to read them! :)

How about you? Any good books that you've bought lately?

I have a Borders Rewards Card!

Borders has its own Rewards Card! Here's how it can benefit you if you sign up to be a Rewards member at a fee of RM20.

Enjoy 10% discounts when you buy:
1. Borders full-priced books
2. Basheer full-priced books
3. KL Commercial full-priced books
4. Unipress full-priced books
5. Starbucks F&B at selected outlets
6. Metrojaya products (on normal priced Metrojaya Fashion private labels when you spend RM100 and above in a single receipt at any Metrojaya departmental store)

Get 5% discounts when you buy:
1. Magazines
2. Hallmark greeting cards
3. Campap stationery products

There are other benefits too but the discounts should be the most enticing. Well, the 10% discount is not as attractive if compared to Popular bookshop's 20% discount on books for members but it's a good start for those who love Borders like I do. :)

I was at Borders Queensbay Mall last week and I couldn't help noticing the signs promoting the Rewards Card. How could I not ask about it, right?

So, when you sign up, you get a normal-sized card along with two sidecards with holes on the top left corner. You can hook the sidecards to keychains and stuff. But I don't really see the need of it if I already carry the big card in my wallet where I keep my money which I will use to buy books and whatnot.

All the cards have barcodes though. The cashier will scan it and credit points for you. I will need to find out how to keep track of my points and how to use them.

Ah, I'm not promoting for Borders but I just think that the discounts are better than none at all. :)

New books and update on my Kindle 3

I make it a rule not to buy any books whenever I decide to stop by bookshops like Borders, MPH or Popular. Why? Because there are so many unread books at home! But I overheard an announcement in Borders this morning and I thought I heard that if I spent RM50 and above, I'd be entitled to some special promotion or something.

So I grabbed a copy of Pop Star! magazine, which had Justin Bieber posters inside. No, I'm not gonna pin Justin up in my room but my niece was asking for large posters of him. Then I browsed the Young Adult section to select a title so that my purchase would amount to more than RM50.

Boy, was it tough to choose a book! There was an abundant of great titles but it took me a really long time to make up my mind. I would have grabbed them all if I had all the money in the world but since I don't enjoy such luxury, I decided to settle for one book only.

Finally, I chose Legacies by Mercedes Lackey and Rosemary Edghill. I haven't heard of this book before but the synopsis on the back sounded good. It cost me RM39.90.

So I went to pay for the book and magazine. Guess what? There was no promotion for purchases above RM50. I must have heard wrong. The cashier said there were promotions only for those who were going to fly on Malaysia Airlines and also something about RM100. Hmph! I swear I heard RM50 somewhere. Never mind.

Anyway, the Borders store at Queensbay Mall is going to set up a Book Club. They might meet once or twice a month. It's not confirmed yet but they're getting members now.

I also received the copy of Complete Idiot's Guide to Personal Finance in Your 20s & 30s, which I ordered from Book Depository.

Meanwhile, I got The Baby Bible Christmas Storybook for review. Thanks Audra from The B&B Media Group for sending it to me!

Last of all, a copy of The Nanny Returns by Nicola Kraus and Emma McLaughlin arrived in my mailbox a couple of weeks ago. I had to review it as part of the International Book Tour.

As for my Kindle 3, it's already been shipped to my vPost address in the US. (Click here to sign up for vPost if you want to.) I also had to send the invoice for my Kindle order to vPost for processing. I'll need to pay for shipping to Malaysia after that. Let's hope they get back to me soon! I placed my order for the Kindle on Oct 20 and it's been such a long wait since!

The Ultimate Teen Book Guide - Very Ultimate!

Yesterday, while browsing through the bookshelves of Borders bookstore, I came upon a very interesting book, which caught my eye. Well, I simply plucked it out like I always did with most books. Wow, when I opened it, I was mesmerized. I love the book!

It's called The Ultimate Teen Book Guide, edited by Daniel Hahn, Leonie Flynn, and Susan Reuben. It has 448 pages filled with cool book reviews. Then, there are different categories of books, too, so the reader can find his/her way around the book easily. It's priced at a hefty RM85.95. I might buy it later when I have extra cash or when I strike the lottery.

This book is a guide for those blur teens who don't know what to read next or don't know which book to read. How would you know if it's an interesting book or not? What's the story about? Well, the book has reviews of over 700 cool books. And some of the reviewers include Meg Cabot, Jean Ure, Melvin Burgess, Anthony Horowitz and many more! Now, you know what your favourite authors love to read!

Borders Is The Best!

It’s official. For now, my favourite bookstore is Borders! Yes!

Yesterday, my mom and I went to Penang by ferry! Haha! She’s so adventurous until she said she’d rather go by ferry and then taxi to Gurney Plaza. The ferry ride was fabulous! Passengers who come on foot get to sit on top and the wind blowing was nice.

When we arrived in Penang, there were taxi drivers hanging around and asked my mom where we wanted to go. She said, ‘Gurney Plaza’ and the taxi driver asked his friends if any of them would like to take us there. One guy suggested RM12 and another suggested a preposterous RM15! I didn’t know taxi fees were so high. They did not even use the meters. It seems that the meter system has yet to start.

My mom took the RM12 one and off we went to Gurney Plaza. She wanted to look for shoes so we went to shoe shops first. Nah, I just looked around. I didn’t buy any because I’m broke! Haha! Maybe another day.

Finally, I spotted the MPH Bookstore and we went in. Yesterday was the second time I went to MPH as I don’t go to Gurney Plaza much. Anyway, there were so many books there! But I didn’t like the way the fiction books were arranged. In Borders, several books whose covers were displayed so that we can see them. At MPH, all the books were arranged like in a library so I had to read the titles on the spines. And the lighting there wasn’t as bright as Borders. Even Popular was brighter.

However, the selection of movies at MPH was satisfactory. Better than Borders. There weren’t many good movies available at Borders but at MPH, there were more interesting choices. I begged my mom to buy the Gulliver’s Travels movie. It’s only RM16.90. Pretty cheap for an original movie with English subtitles! I like VCDs that come with English subtitles.

At MPH, the bookshelves were quite close together and not much space to walk. I don’t recall seeing any sofa chairs there either.

Ok, I should stop comparing! I think that each bookstore is special in its own way. Borders for its nice atmosphere and good selection of books. MPH for its good selection of books and movies as well as discounts. Popular for its ‘just okay’ selection of books and great discounts!

There are a few more bookstores that I’ve yet to conquer. I hope I could go to Chowrasta Road and check out the second-hand bookshops there! Can’t wait!

And this is my 100th post! =D

Where do you buy your books?

I received some rather bad news the other day from MPH. They e-mailed me telling me that the book I want, ‘I Capture the Castle’ by Dodie Smith is NOT in print anymore. I mean, how bad is that?

Answer: Very bad.

I’m willing to give my eye-teeth just to have that book. I’ve wanted the book for a very long time. Okay, I have no idea if the book is interesting or not but it should be a good read judging from the synopsis and all its reviews that I’ve come across.

The book I want is RM32.90 and I saw it in Borders. Twice! When I finally had enough money to buy it, it’s gone. Just like that. I searched high and low for it but it’s nowhere to be seen. The only one left cost RM50++. I’m not going to pay so much for the book. Well, for now anyway.

I think I’ve searched most online bookstores to see if they had the book or not. Acmamall has the RM50 one too.

All the same, here is a list of online and offline bookstores:

1. Borders
2. Popular
3. MPH Online
4. Reader’s Shack
5. Acmamall
6. Silverfish books
7. eBay (though mostly second-hand books there)
8. Amazon (anyone from Malaysia shopped here before?)
9. Kinokuniya (I don’t go there often mainly because I don’t live in KL! What a waste.)

I can’t think of anymore stores. Do you know of any bookstores not listed above? Some online ones that I’ve never heard before? Don't hesitate to let me know, okay? =D

20% discount for books at Borders

I went to my beloved Borders today and bought a new book, Rebel Angels by Libba Bray! I finished A Great and Terrible Beauty by the same author already and the review is right over here.

Finally, there is another promotion at Borders where you only need to purchase any magazine at full price and then you get a 20% discount on any book you want. Of course, you need to present the coupon from yesterday's Reads Monthly in StarMag when making your payment.

I really wanted to buy 'I Capture The Castle' by Dodie Smith for a very long time. I saw the book in Borders
twice and never bought it! And now that I want to buy it, it's not available anymore. It is most heart-breaking and unfortunate. Now, it's not available anywhere! I tried searching the MPH website for it but it's unavailable too. So, I just, like, made a special order for it. Hope it will be available for me!!!
