Book giveaway: Fiction books from Crown

*Contest is over. Thanks!*

Good news for my readers today! :) Here is a giveaway for you to enter to win any of these wonderful new books from The Crown Publishing Group.

There will be three winners! The books that are up for grabs are:

1. A Christmas Home by Greg Kincaid

2. Nutcracker by E.T.A. Hoffmann (Illustrated by Maurice Sendak and translated by Ralph Manheim)
3. Break the Skin by Lee Martin

More details on the books:

A Christmas Home by Greg Kincaid, the New York Times bestselling author of the beloved A Dog Named Christmas and its prequel Christmas with Tucker, is a heart-warming, holiday story of love and the unbreakable bond between a young man with developmental disabilities and his dog.

Todd McCray, hero of A Dog Named Christmas, as well as the Hallmark Hall of Fame movie hit, is now twenty-four years old and working at a local animal shelter, where he meets and quickly becomes best friends with Laura, a young volunteer. Life seems good for Todd, but all is not well in his hometown. Struggling families unable to make ends meet are abandoning more and more dogs and the shelter is swelling to capacity. Local governments are struggling to meet their obligations too, and in early December, on the cusp of another holiday season, Todd’s boss breaks the bad news.  Due to funding problems, the shelter will close its doors before the end of the year.  But what will happen to all the animals and where will Todd work? What will happen to his emerging relationship with Laura?
With the same reverence for classic storytelling tradition that distinguishes his last two tales, Kincaid’s A Christmas Home (on sale Oct 30, 2012) is a charming fireside read and sure to be another holiday classic.

Nutcracker by E.T.A. Hoffmann (Illustrated by Maurice Sendak and translated by Ralph Manheim), reissued a few months following Maurice Sendak’s death and on the 50th anniversary of Where the Wild Things Are, is a lush and beautifully illustrated edition that serves as a wonderful tribute to Sendak’s life at a time when his legions of fans worldwide are honoring his legacy and ballets are performing their own versions of this timeless classic.

Called “a classic, new and complete” by the New York Times Book Review, Sendak’s Nutcracker
(on sale Oct 30, 2012) brings to life Hoffmann’s mysterious world with his extraordinary illustrations, and this stunning reissue is being published just in time for the holidays.

Break the Skin: A Novel by Lee Martin – in paperback Nov 13, 2012 from Broadway Books is a new work of taut, dark, and beautifully crafted literary fiction by the author of the Pulitzer Prize finalist The Bright Forever.

I got me some new books!

Let's start from the bottom:

1. The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling
2. The Harmony Silk Factory by Tash Aw
3. The Fourth Estate by Jeffrey Archer
4. 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami
5. The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett
6. Catching the Sun by Tony Parsons

That was a good book haul, wasn't it? Bought them from Borders at Queensbay Mall yesterday. Got quite a pretty good deal, I think. They have this 'Buy 1, get 2nd at 50% off on the same stickered items, the least expensive book is discounted' promotion going on.

I had to choose proper-sounding titles as this would be off my company's book allowance. It was also important that I have the interest to read them! :)

How about you? Any good books that you've bought lately?

No Season 2 for Jane by Design??

I love the show 'Jane by Design' starring Erica Dasher and Andie MacDowell! My colleague introduced this comedy drama TV show to me a couple of months ago and I've been diligently streaming the episodes of Season One during my free time.

About the show: Jane is a not-so-popular high school student who accepts the job as assistant to a world famous fashion designer. She then tries to juggle her life as a student and as an 'adult' in the working world.

After the first two episodes, I could not believe how I have not known about this show before. It's quite addictive although I found several aspects of the show quite unbelievable, eg, Jane's best friend, Billy, who always seems to be hanging around with nothing else to do but to help her out in her times of need.

Today I'm watching Episode 17 of the show's first season. Then I found out the bad news. There will be no Season Two.

WHAT??????!!!!!?????? NO........................!!!!!!

The production company, ABC Family, announced that 'the series was cancelled' due to poor ratings. Now I cannot believe that there will be no more new Jane episodes to look forward to once I finish Season One. :(

If you are, like me, a fan of this show, you might just want to visit this page and sign the petition to NOT cancel the Jane by Design show. Not sure if it will be effective but it is worth a try.
